「教える側にとっては何より使いやすく、学習者にとっては何よりわかりやすいという教科書がほしい」。日本語教師のこのような願いが本書作成の出発点であり、作成作業全体を通じての原動力ともなった。そして、作成スタッフのイメージする「教師の側からの使いやすさ」が本書の「一日一課」というコンセプトを生み出した。すなわち、初級の標準的な学習期間約6ヵ月(90日)で初級の必要事項を学ぶことと設定し、その項目を全90課に配分した。これによって、1課を何回かに分けるスケジュール作りや教師間の引き継ぎ作業のわずらわしさから解放され、コース全体の進度の狂いも避けられ、とりわけ教師の授業準備がしやすくなるのではないかと考えた。また、「学習者の側からのわかりやすさ」を実現するためには、視覚的な媒介、絵や図や表などが学習者の理解の大きな助けになるとの考えから、イラストをふんだんに取り入れるべく努めた。
