A five-centuries survey on Greek icons from the 14th to 18th century through over sixty extraordinary masterpieces 'mostly never shown to the public before' from the Andreadis collection, one of the most important private collection of Greek icons in the world. After the introduction by Anastasia Drandaki, the book starts presenting the most ancient icons, the Palaeologue icons (named from the famous Bizantine imperial dinasty) dated in the 13th-14th century and including major works such as the Vergin Perivleptos, the Man of Sorrows with Lamenting Virgin, the Nativiy and the Lamentation. Then the volume documents the birth and the development of the Cretan school of painting in the 15th and 16th century (with the works by masters Angelos Akotantos and Andreas Ritzos), the workshops from mainland Greece and the influence of Cretan artists in the painting of Mount Athos in the second half of the 16th century, late 17th-century Cretan painting and the development of the Creto-Ionian School. The books ends with Macedonian and central Greece workshops and other late 17th-early 18th century workshops.
